OCEAN SPRINGS – A Vancleave man wanted for felony shoplifting has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after he was caught with drugs on school property. Albert Matthew Everett, 25, was spotted by a security officer at the Ocean Springs Middle School about 3 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Everett was walking across the school’s parking lot when the officer recognized him and knew he was wanted on felony shoplifting charges. The officer initiated contact with Everett and placed him under arrest.

Ocean Springs Police responded to the scene and took Everett into custody. During his transfer, police officers found Everett to be in possession of various drug paraphernalia and possession of a schedule II control substance identified as Oxycotin.

Ocean Springs officials said the Narcotics Task Force of Jackson County has taken over the investigation and has charged Everett with one count of possession of a controlled substance within 1500 feet of school property.

Everett is currently being housed in the Ocean Springs Municipal Jail on the felony shoplifting charge. The felony shoplifting charge was a result of a incident that took place last year on Aug. 30, 2010 at the Ace Hardware in Ocean Springs.

During the arrest, police said Everett was not at any time a threat to the students or staff at the Ocean Springs Middle School and that school officials took appropriate steps to ensure the safety of students and staff during the incident.

Bond for Everett has not been set and he was scheduled to appear in court this week.
