Greenwood police have arrested a man who allegedly stabbed an elderly woman with a screwdriver after he asked her for money. Charlie Smith, 39, has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly stabbing 70-year old Mary Blackstone.

Authorities said the incident occurred on Oct. 12 at Blackstone’s residence on East Adams Street. Smith, who worked for the woman off and on, reportedly went to her home and asked her for a ride to the store and for money. Police said as Blackstone was writing Smith a check, Smith allegedly stabbed her several times with a screwdriver.

Blackstone was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital and was reportedly in stable condition.

Bond for Smith, who is currently on parole for uttering forgery, was set at $200,000.

Man runs over his girlfriend with his car

A Moss Point man is behind bars after Jackson County authorities said he ran over his girlfriend as he backed out of the driveway. Efren Alvarez, 28, has been charged with aggravated domestic violence after he and the woman got into a heated argument.

Officials said the incident occurred in the 9400 block of Saracennia Road, and Alvarez got in his car to leave the home. The woman was reportedly standing behind his vehicle when authorities said Alvarez deliberately backed the car over the woman.

The woman, 24, sustained injuries to her head, arm and hip.

Bond for Alvarez was set at $10,000, which he posted and was released.

Five teens charged with vandalism

Authorities in Alcorn County have charged five teenagers with malicious mischief following an incident at Alcon Central High School. Officials said fluorescent orange paint was used to write obscene words and pictures on the school’s field house, driveway, football field and some senior picture ads, WCBI reported.

The school is considering the installation of surveillance cameras to hopefully prevent future acts of vandalism.

Governor’s new vehicle cost taxpayers $34k

Officials said the new car for Mississippi’s governor cost the state $34,000. With the lease on his 2004 Nissian Armada expired, Haley Barbour, has leased a new 2011 Infiniti QX56, valued at $61,660, for two years. The two-year lease is $34,500.

The car was likely chosen by a member of the governor’s security team because of its size and maneuverability. The car is leased through the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Barbour is in his final term as governor.
