Woman shoots stepson to death

SALTILLO – A Lee County woman has been bound over to the grand jury after authorities said she allegedly shot her stepson to death. Lisa Sandlin, 44, was arrested and charged with murder on Sept. 22, after an altercation with her stepson, 36-year old Kirk Sandlin, at their home on County Road 1946.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said they initially responded to the scene after a 911 call was placed from the residence.

“We know there was at least one family member that was there at the time of the incident,” Johnson said. “And several other people had been there all day. They were possibly grilling or getting ready to. We don’t know what happened at that time, but there was some type of ongoing disagreement between the two.”

Johnson said statements from witnesses indicate that Sandlin retrieved a .410 caliber shotgun and allegedly shot Kirk in the stomach while they were outside the home.

When authorities arrived, Sandlin was taken into custody without incident and Kirk was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Johnson said there were no other injuries at the scene, and Sandlin showed no signs of physical trauma.

A .410 caliber shotgun was also retrieved at the scene.

Johnson said his department has never responded to the home before for any domestic situation, and a motive in the killing is still unclear.

“To our knowledge, we’ve had no dealings with her,” Johnson said. “She’s originally from Kansas, and she married the victim’s father, but we’re not sure how long she’s been living there. But other than the information gathered from the suspect that night and people on the scene, we don’t know what was going on. It could have been a typical step mom/step son situation. We just don’t know.”

Johnson said Kirk’s elderly grandmother witnessed the murder, but because of her age and the trauma she experienced associated with the crime, she was initially unable to give a statement.

Johnson said Kirk also lived at the home and prior to his death had drug charges against him from the state.

Sandlin remains in the Lee County jail on a $250,000 bond.
