Man shot in the back; JPD looking for suspect

JACKSON – Jackson police said a local man was shot in the back early Thursday morning and the suspected shooter remains at large. Officer Colendula Green, of the Jackson Police Department, said around 12:18 a.m. on May 19, the victim, 21-year old Antonio Yates and his friend were sitting in a car in the Sunset Drive Apartments’ parking lot at 3540 Sunset Drive.

Yates told police an unknown black male approached them and words were exchanged.

“The suspect became angry and pulled out a 9mm handgun,” Officer Green said. “The victim stated that he began to exit the vehicle to go home to avoid an altercation with the suspect [and as he was] walking away, the suspect fired several rounds at him.”

Green said Yates was hit in the back and transported to UMC by private vehicle.

Police arrived at UMC’s emergency room in response to the shooting.

Green said Yates is listed in stable condition and detectives are searching for the suspect who allegedly fled the scene in an unknown direction.
