GULFPORT, Mississippi (AP) — Police say the 25-year-old man accused in a slaying at a Gulfport apartment complex initially claimed to be a witness to the crime.
The Sun Herald reports Michael Philip Peden faces a murder charge in the July 1 shooting death of 30-year-old Christopher Jerome Smith. The case was ordered sent to a Harrison County grand jury after a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Harrison County prosecuting attorney Herman Cox says Peden was the one who flagged police down and said he had seen someone kill a person and had heard the screams and gunshots.
Peden is held at the Harrison County jail on a $1 million bond.
Online jail records do not list an attorney for him.
