Victim was pronounced dead at the scene

The Highway patrol said a man riding in the back of a pickup truck was killed Sunday night near Gulfport after possibly falling from the truck. Adam King, 31, of Denham Springs, Louisiana was pronounced dead at the scene on Interstate 10 on May 8.

Authorities aren’t sure if King fell out of the truck, but investigators said his brother and a friend were in the cab. Officials did not release who was driving, but they said King died of massive blunt force trauma.

The accident occurred about 3:16 a.m., and it remains under investigation.

Cabins burn on Neshoba County Fairgrounds

At least 16 cabins were destroyed Monday at the Neshoba County Fairgrounds after a fire swept through the park. Authorities said it took firefighters about two hours to contain the blaze that seemed confined to the “new” section of the fairgrounds.

The Fairview Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched about 8:43 a.m. and calls also went out to other area fire departments.

Officials said the cabins are usually occupied only during the week-long fair held each summer. This year’s fair is scheduled for July 22 – 29 and attracts thousands of people for political speeches, horse racing and other forms of entertainment.

Trackhoes were on the scene Monday to clear away the debris.

Parchman guard jailed on drug possession

A guard at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman has been arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and the introduction of contraband.

Cardel Davis, an employee at Parchman, was arrested on April 19 and his bond was set at $10,000. Authorities said Davis allegedly brought those items into the prison.

Davis posted bond on April 20 and was released.

Man shot outside apartment complex

Jackson police are still investigating a shooting at the Column Apartments that left one man seriously wounded. Jackson Police Spokesman Officer Colendula Green said on March 23 about 2:54 a.m., officers responded to the 51 Northtown Drive/Column Apartments in reference to a shooting.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, 30-year old Demario Amos, was outside in front of the residence when the suspect, 23-year old Onyekwelu Okeke, pulled up in a Ford Crown Victoria, exited the vehicle and fired multiple shots at the victim.

The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction, but was stopped moments later at Highway 80 near Valley Street. Okeke was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives.

Amos was shot twice; once in the back and the leg. Amos was transported to UMC Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Okeke was subsequently charged with aggravated assault.
