Man beats girlfriend; chains her outside with dog

CLARKSDALE – Authorities said a man who nearly beat his girlfriend to death and then chained her in a feces infested kennel with his dog, is scheduled to appear in court next month. John Casey, 25, was arrested on May 7 after Coahoma County deputies said he assaulted Lauren Brocato.

Casey, who reportedly has a prior history of domestic violence with his ex-wife, was charged this month with sexual battery, aggravated assault and domestic violence. His bond was set at $250,000.

Coahoma County Sheriff Charles Jones said on May 3, Casey became angry with Brocato, and allegedly shouted at her, “You’re going to die.”

Jones said in a jealous rage, Casey allegedly made good on his threat and physically attacked Brocato between 1 and 2 a.m. that morning. Brocato was allegedly sexually assaulted, beaten and dragged outside Casey’s home by her feet. Authorities said Casey reportedly stuffed Brocato inside his dog’s kennel and chained her down forcing her to lay in the filth and stench for several hours.

Brocato’s father, Sammy, told the Press Register, that his daughter managed to free herself, several hours later, and drove to his home.

“My daughter showed up at 6:30 a.m., at my front door and I could hardly recognize her,” Sammy told the Register. “If you didn’t know who she was you wouldn’t recognize her.”

Sammy Brocato told the Register his daughter had “a collapsed lung, broken ribs, a fractured right eye socket, an injured leg, chain markings on her body along with bruises where she said she had been kicked, drug by her feet and beaten.”

He also said Casey intentionally vandalized his daughter’s car and took away her cell phone.

“She finally found her keys and got into her car and drove home to us,” Sammy said. “Also, she had been hit on the forehead with some type of floor tiling, because there was busted tile everywhere.”

Brocato was taken to Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with multiple injuries. She has since been released.

Casey was arrested and transported to the Coahoma County jail.

Casey’s initial request to have his $250,000 bond reduced was denied by Judge Jessie Burton in Coahoma County Justice Court.

Casey has since bonded out. He is scheduled to appear in court in June.
