Suspect is mom’s boyfriend

A Cleveland man was arrested for touching a young girl inappropriately, authorities said. Cleveland Police said Derrick Johnson was charged with child molestation after he allegedly “rubbed” the girl’s private area with his hands.

Authorities said Johnson is the boyfriend of the child’s mother, and has no prior charges.

Cleveland Police Chief Buster Bingham said the 10-year old girl told her mother of the incident and her mother took her to the Bolivar Medical Center Emergency Room in Cleveland. The mother then called police, which Bingham said is “always the right thing to do.”

A warrant was issued for Johnson and his bond was set at $10,000.

Alderman dies at parents’ home

The Rosedale community was stunned and shocked by the recent death of Alderman Jerry “Jerrel” Cholon Jones. Jones died on March 17 at his parents’ home in Kosciusko. He was 42.

The Bolivar Commercial said Jones ran for city councilman last year and won a seat on the board. Former Rosedale Mayor J.Y. Trice told The Bolivar Commercial that Jones was a “very fine young man” and a “hard worker.”

Jones also worked for Cives Steel. Jones’ cause of death has not been released.

Funeral services for Jones were held on March 20 at West Bolivar Middle School in Rosedale.

Booneville man arrested for child pornography

Attorney General Jim Hood said Mitchell Kennedy was arrested and charged with one count of possession of child pornography. Kennedy, 42, was arrested by the Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force and he was being held without bond pending his initial appearance.

The Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department assisted with this case.
