Jackson State holds off Concordia (Ala.) 73-63

JACKSON – Kelsey Howard scored 20 points and Christian Williams added 19 as Jackson State held off Concordia (Ala.) in a 73-63 win on Sunday night. This was their first win of the season, following a 0-4 start to the season.

“To get a win like this builds confidence,” said Head Coach Tevester Anderson. “We have to build on this and come back and play much better on Tuesday.”

Four tigers scored in double digits. Kelsey Howard led the way, scoring a career high 20 points on 8-13 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds in 34 minutes. He was also 4-7 from behind the three-point arc. Christian Williams follow with 19 points on 8-10 shooting and eight assist in 35 minutes. He also had seven steals.

Pre-season SWAC player of the year Jenirro Bush added 13 points (3-12), four rebounds and three steals in 28 minutes. He was also 7-9 from the free throw line. Sydney Coleman chipped in with 10 points (3-7), five rebounds and two blocked shots in 31 minutes of action. Raymond Gregory had a good defensive game, as he finished with four blocked shots in 13 minutes.

Travis Rasco led the way for Concordia scoring a game high 26 points (9-15) with seven rebounds. He also had three steals. John Nixon followed up with 13 points and five assist.

Jackson State led Concordia 36-27 at half time. In the first half, the Tigers shot 59.3 percent from the field, going 16-27. Concordia shot 40 percent from the floor, going 10-25 from the field. In the second half, JSU shot 38.5 percent from the field, going 10-26.

Concordia increased its shooting percentage to 51.9 percent, going 14-27. For the game, the Tigers shot 49.1 percent and Concordia shot 46.2 percent. JSU edge Concordia in rebounds 31-30.

Jackson State will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 22 when the Tigers take on Tulsa in the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
