No suspects in custody

Jackson police came to the aid of one of their on Wednesday morning when the officer reported that his service weapon and other personal items had been stolen from his car. Officer Colendula Green said the items, including the officer’s 9MM Glock police issued weapon, had been stolen from his personal vehicle.

Green said about 8:24 a.m., on Jan. 18, officers responded to an address in the 4000 block of Ritchey Drive, and the unidentified officer related what had been stolen.

Green said they have no suspects in custody and anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234.

Man that allegedly shot city worker out on bail

A man who reportedly shot a Booneville city employee has been released after his bond amount was reduced. Alberto Naranjo, 36, of Booneville, was being held on a $100,000 bond after an alleged altercation with city worker Bradley Cain in October 2010.

Authorities said both men claim to have fired a weapon, in self-defense, during an altercation on Court Street. Cain said he and a chamber of commerce employee were setting out construction cones for an upcoming fall festival when he was reportedly shot by Naranjo. Naranjo claims Cain shot at him first and he returned fire to protect himself.

Naranjo’s bond was reduced to $40,000 with the stipulation that he cannot leave the state or have any contact with anyone involved in the case.

WTVA reported that Cain was also charged with aggravated assault with a motor vehicle for allegedly ramming Naranjo’s vehicle with his truck prior to the shooting.

Both men are awaiting the action of the grand jury.

Ocean Springs man killed in fiery car wreck

Authorities in Ocean Springs are awaiting an autopsy report for a man that died in a fiery car wreck earlier this month. Tanner Charles Fountain, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene on Jan. 4, after authorities received several 911 calls about the accident.

Police responded to the scene, in the 2200 block of Government Street, about 11:59 p.m., and found Fountain’s 1997 green Pontiac Grand Am heavily damaged and on fire. Fountain was still in the vehicle at the time and unconscious. Authorities said Fountain collided with a power pole and then an oak tree.

The Ocean Springs Fire Department along with Acadian Emergency Services also responded to the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished, but Fountain was deceased at that time.

The incident remains under investigation.
