Inmate charged with killing cellmate

HOLMES COUNTY – An inmate accused of killing another inmate while in jail has been bound over to the Holmes County Grand Jury. Reginald Edwards, 27, was charged with the murder of 24-year old Kelvin Holliman after authorities said he allegedly hit Holliman in head with a padlock.

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating the case since it occurred on Dec. 29, 2009 at the Holmes County Jail on U.S. Highway 12 East in Lexington.

Holliman died a day after the attack.

At the time of the attack, Holmes County Sheriff Willie March said Holliman was in the E Zone area with at least 50 other inmates when it was reported that he was injured.

Holliman was found on the floor unconscious, but was awake when examined by the jail’s nurse. The nurse determined Holliman needed additional treatment and he was transported to a local hospital and then airlifted to UMC in Jackson. He died on Dec. 30 from internal bleeding due to blunt force trauma to the head.

March said they suspected Holliman was hit with a padlock, but that was not confirmed until an inmate was overheard telling a family member about the incident.

“The inmate called his family and was talking about the murder and that gave us some leads in the case,” March said.

March said Edwards refused to make a statement in the case, but other inmates said he hit Holliman in the head with a padlock he put in a sock. Hollimon was knocked unconscious as he fell backwards and hit his head on the concrete floor.

No motive in the attack has been disclosed.

Edwards, who was serving six years on a drug charge, was transferred to the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman pending a trial. If convicted, he faces life in prison.

Holliman was serving 14 years for burglary.
