Helicopter crashes in Jackson neighborhood this afternoon

JACKSON, Miss. — A helicopter crashed just before 3 p.m. today on a house near the corner of Martin Luther King Drive and Holliman Avenue, Hinds County emergency officials said.

The crash involved a privately owned three-seat Robinson Raven plane carrying two people. The victims were taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where one was pronounced dead and the other in critical condition. The identities have not yet been revealed pending investigation and notification of family members.

According to Jackson Police Department’s Lt. Jeffery Scott, the helicopter was practicing maneuvers at Hawkins Field.

“While practicing the maneuvers, the plane crashed at 1316 Holliman Avenue,” said Scott. “The FBI, NTST, as well as other local law enforcement personnel are on the scene.”
The home was vacant at the time of the crash, however the owners had been notified and were enroute to the scene.
Neighborhood residents said that although they didn’t see the plane actually crash, they compared the sound of the crash to a train wreck or a multiple car collision.
“It’s almost hard to explain,” said Jessie Sims. Sims was across the street from the home on Holliman Avenue at the time of the crash. “But, it was so loud and it was like cars crashing. So we went out to see what happened and saw it was a helicopter.”
The cause of the crash is not yet known and is being investigated by authorities. More information will be made available as known.
