Health care supervisor arrested for exploitation

JACKSON – The former supervisor of an independent living program has been arrested for coercing two vulnerable adults to turn over more than $2,000 from their personal funds to her for her own private use. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said 47-year old Toni Rawls, of Jackson, turned herself into Hinds County authorities after being indicted by a Hinds County grand jury on two counts of exploitation of a vulnerable person.

At the time the crimes are alleged to have been committed, Rawls was working as supervisor of an independent living program operated through Hudspeth Regional Center.

Rawls allegedly abused her position by having two vulnerable persons under her supervision write and cash 12 checks from their personal checking accounts totaling approximately $2,035.

Rawls stands accused of converting those funds for her own use.

Rawls turned herself on Dec. 24, Hood said, and if convicted, she faces up to 20 years in jail and $20,000 in fines.
