Greater Jackson Chamber honors metro teachers

JACKSON, Miss. – It is often said that teachers are not appreciated for the service they render.

This is perhaps why the Greater Jackson Chamber Partnership (GJCP) showed it gratitude to metro area teachers Thursday, Feb. 18.  GJCP hosted its 15th Annual Metro Teacher Recognition Luncheon at the Old Capitol Inn on State Street in Jackson.

“The program, sponsored by BancorpSouth, was created to show appreciation and recognize truly outstanding educators working in the various metro area school districts,” Chamber Partnership officials said.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized,” said Teacher Sheneica Adams of Walton Elementary School. “Teachers are sometimes overlooked for what we do, but it’s a blessing to be recognized, and we thank The Greater Chamber so much for recognizing us each year for the amount of a dedication and hard work we put into our profession.”

Adams is one of 12 metro teachers honored during the recognition luncheon.

“It’s very humbling, because I know what the company I’m in, and I know all the great teachers that were my teachers growing up,” said Brett Mayfield, a teacher at Madison Central. “So, I’m very honored by it.”

Each year, the organization sends nomination forms to public, private, and parochial K-12 schools in the metro area. Principals and Parent/Teacher organizations are encouraged to nominate one member of their faculty that represents an individual that truly embodies what it means to be “outstanding.”

According to GJCP information, “the program was not created in an effort to select the “best” teacher, but more of an attempt to showcase some of the tremendous educational talent in our metro area.”

A special committee reviews the applications and selects the top 12 metro area teachers based on their essays, unique activity implementation, and ability to correlate the classroom to the real world.
