Grammy winner Jason Crabb to perform for church in Derma

DERMA – For more than a 100 years, Derma Baptist Church in Calhoun County has been a rock within the community, and on July 15, they’ll call upon another powerhouse, gospel singer Jason Crabb, to help them in their fundraising efforts.

A Grammy-award winning artist, Jason will perform at a benefit concert for the church on July 15 at 7 p.m. at the Calhoun Academy Gymnasium. Tickets are still on sale.

Long time lead vocalist for The Crabb Family – a southern gospel singing group – Jason is the oldest of the Crabb sons and he won a Grammy for his debut solo album, “Jason Crabb,” in the “Best Southern/Country/Bluegrass Gospel Album” category. The album was also nominated for a Dove Award for “Country Album of the Year.”

After all five siblings of The Crabb Family retired the group in 2007 to pursue their independent dreams and goals, Jason focused on his solo career. He’s performed at Carnegie Hall, become a ‘fan favorite’ at the Grand Ole Opry, appeared regularly on the Gaither Homecoming Series videos, and was honored to sing for the Rev. Billy Graham’s farewell crusade in New York City. Jason’s voice has echoed in churches great and small at home in the U.S. and around the world.

Jason was voted “Favorite Male Vocalist” at the first annual Harmony Honors Awards and “Favorite Young Artist” at the 2000 Singing News Fan Awards. Four years later, he was voted “2004 Gospel Music Male Vocalist of the Year.”

The winner of 10 Dove Awards, some of Jason’s most popular songs include “The Cross,” “Greater Is He,” “Please Forgive Me,” “Through the Fire,” “The Lamb, the Lion, and the King,” “I Sure Miss You,” “That’s No Mountain,” “Please Come Down To Me” and “I’d Rather Have Jesus.”

His second solo album, “Because It’s Christmas,” was released in September 2010.

Officials at Derma Baptist Church said proceeds from the concert will aid in the construction of a new building at their Main Street location that will be used for future events for the congregation.

“The building will serve as a fellowship hall, meeting facility and event facility,” said Alison Nichols, of Derma Baptist Church. “It will also have a commercial kitchen and a choir suite.”

Boasting more than 300 members and pastored by Dr. John Warren, Derma Baptist was organized during the early 1900s.

Nichols mentioned earlier, said having a talent like Jason Crabb, to perform will benefit the entire community.

“Our church is in a very small and rural area,” Nichols said, “and we wanted to bring a concert worship event into the area for everyone.”
