‘Good Samaritan’ helps catch bank robbers

JACKSON – Lt. Jeffery Scott of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department said thanks to the quick thinking of a Good Samaritan, three men are behind bars after allegedly robbing a bank early Monday morning. Scott said 33-year old Daniel Awabdy, of Byram, 24-year old James Mitchell, of Uttica, and 21-year old Jeremy Hartsuck, of Jackson, were arrested and charged with one count of bank robbery.

Scott said shortly after 10 a.m., on Feb. 28, Awabdy reportedly entered a Bancorp South branch at 5767 Siwell Road and demanded cash from the teller.

“There was no weapon used,” Scott said. “But there was the threat of force and that carries a lot of weight.”

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, Awabdy was spotted by the Good Samaritan running from the bank and driving away in a Honda mini-van.

Scott said the citizen proceeded to follow Awabdy in his vehicle and contacted the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department by telephone.

Hinds County deputies stopped Awabdy at the intersection of Savannah and I-55 south Frontage Road and he was arrested along with Mitchell and Hartstuck. All three men were transported to the Hinds County Detention Center and bond has not been set for any of the suspects.
