JACKSON – The former town clerk for the city of Anguilla has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $100,000.

State Auditor Stacey Pickering said 33-year-old Manika Kelly was arrested on Aug. 20, following an indictment by a Sharkey County grand jury. Pickering said the alleged embezzlement occurred for the time period of October 2006 through November 2011 totaling $107,444.67.

Kelly served as town clerk from July 2001 through February 7, 2012 when she was fired by the city. Her responsibilities included receipting and depositing fees paid to the Town of Anguilla for water and sewer services.

Pickering alleges Kelly took those funds and converted them to her own personal use.

Kelly was booked by the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Office and her bond was set at $15,000. Her arraignment is set for Sept. 13.
