Former alderman arrested for assault

DREW – A former alderman for the town of Ruleville was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman from Drew, authorities said. Mario Robinson was taken into custody after police said he went to a friend’s house, kicked in the door and assaulted her.

“They had some kind of a dating relationship,” said Drew Police Chief Anthony Gibson. “And he assaulted her by choking her and striking her with his fists.”

Gibson said a neighbor called police and when they arrived at the Joseph Street residence, Robinson was arrested without incident.

Gibson said the woman, who was not named, refused medical treatment, but had injuries to her neck, chest, shoulders and arms.

Authorities would not state what led to the assault, but said Robinson and the woman have a history of domestic violence.

Robinson was charged with breaking and entering and aggravated assault. His bond was set at $20,000, and he was bound over to the grand jury.

Robinson reportedly has a history of problems in Ruleville. In November 2009, while he was running for alderman, he was found guilty of violating the private life of Alderwoman JoAnne Frothingham. He was also found guilty of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

During the 2009 city elections, Ruleville Police received a complaint from Frothingham that flyers about her were being circulated.

Reportedly, the flyers contained information about the 1955 murder of Chicago youth Emmett Till, and indicated that Frothingham was the niece of J.W. Milam, one of the men charged with Till’s murder.

Frothingham also told police that two middle school students were taken out of school without their parents’ knowledge or consent and paid $15 each, by Robinson, to distribute the flyers.

A postman reportedly found the flyers in several mailboxes and reported it to the local postmaster.

Robinson was fined for those incidents.
