Elderly man killed in hit and run

OCEAN SPRINGS – Authorities said an 87-year old man is dead after he was hit by a car and left for dead. The accident occurred around 9 a.m., on July 8 on Bienville Blvd., in Ocean Springs. Police responded to the scene and found Joseph F. Bartkiewicz lying on the ground. Detective Lt. John Flowers said Bartkiewicz was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

“He was transported to Ocean Springs Hospital for medical treatment,” said Flowers. “And at approximately 3:50 p.m. Mr. Bartkiewicz died as a result of injuries sustained from the accident.”

Flowers said they learned that the vehicle that allegedly hit Bartkiewicz was an orange Dodge Neon that fled the scene after the accident.

“Officers immediately began searching for the vehicle,” he said. “And it was located a short distance away at the Kangaroo Convenience Store located at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Bienville Blvd.”

The driver of the Dodge Neon, 36-year old William S. Bridges, of Ocean Springs, was taken into custody.

Flowers said Bridges was charged with one count of felony hit and run and one count of DUI causing death. He was taken to the Ocean Springs jail and his bond has not been set.

Investigators are currently waiting for toxicology results from the Mississippi Crime Lab relating to the suspect’s blood alcohol level.
