State gets millions in HUD funding

Congressman Bennie Thompson (pictured) announced that Mississippi just received more than $43 million dollars in grant funding for several housing programs.

BOLTON – Four Mississippi grant programs have received more than $43 million dollars in funding from The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Congressman Bennie Thompson said.

Thompson said the funds will benefit the Community Development Block Grants program, the Emergency Shelter Grants program, the HOME program and the HOPWA program (Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS). Each of the grant awards will have a tremendous impact on residents.

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program annually provides grants to states and local units of government to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons.

The Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) program provides annual grants to state, local, and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency shelters, which has increased moderately since the recent devastating storms and tornadoes across the state.

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low and very low income families by providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities and the HOPWA program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local units of government, states and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/Aids and their families.

CDBG received $27,635,033; ESG received $1,441,015, HOME received $13,665,713 and HOPWA received $951,304.
