Eatery to make downtown Jackson a little more ‘sweet’

Downtown is going to get a little sweeter thanks to a city grant. Mayor Harvey Johnson and the Jackson City Council authorized to execute a $10,000 contract with Scurlocks Donut Shop and Eatery.

Scurlocks owned and operated by Mark and Beverly Scurlock has been a Jackson hot spot for the last 20 years. Mark Scurlock said their popularity comes from the genuine care they have for their product.

“We care about what we produce here in our shop,” said Scurlock. “We’re not just here making products to make money. We’re here building relationships.”

And the relationships are sure to grow with the expansion of the family franchise to downtown Jackson.

“We are excited about opening up the store in downtown,” said Scurlock. “This will give people that haven’t heard of our donuts and breakfast to learn about it and grow to love it.”

This venture is something that city leaders believed in enough to award the donut shop with a grant to subsidize that growth. The $10,000 grant is through the Enterprise Community Program which is administered by the Office of Economic Development.

“This grant will help both of my locations, because the success of the downtown store will boost the success of our [Robinson Rd.] store,” said Scurlock.

Scurlock says when the downtown store opens it will serve the famous donuts, breakfast and eventually lunch.

“We’re excited about this grant because it’s really going to get us started in a great way,” said Scurlock. “With the cost of chairs, tables, kitchen supplies period. It can get expensive. This is truly a blessing.”

If you can’t wait until the new store open, visit Scurlocks Donut Shop and Eatery at 4157-D Robinson Rd. in Jackson. Open from 6 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Saturday.
