Easter barbecue sets woods on fire

News Briefs From Across The State

No reported injuries or damage

Four fire departments from Harrison County responded to a woods fire Sunday afternoon that authorities said was started by a barbecue. Officials said the fire started around noon on April 24 near the area of north Shaw and West Wortham roads.

WLOX reported that the Mississippi Forestry Commission sent two bull dozers to work with the fire departments in extinguishing the blaze. Investigators determined that embers from a charcoal barbecue likely landed on the ground igniting the fire.

Harrison County authorities said no homes were damaged, but a number of homes in the area were in danger. There were no injuries and thus far, no charges in the blaze.

Firefighters remained on the scene to extinguish hot spots and the cause has been ruled an accident.

Man arrested after police search for another suspect

Authorities in Harrison County arrested one man while serving a search warrant for another at an Oak Road residence. Sheriff Melvin Brisolara said Michael Dedeaux, 35, was charged with possession of a controlled substance after authorities went to his home in the 6500 block of Oak Road.

Deputies were there to serve a warrant on another man and when they arrived, several people, including Dedeaux, ran from the house. Dedeaux was captured and authorities allegedly found in his possession 2.6 grams of cocaine base and 28.0 grams of cocaine.

Dedeaux was charged and his bond was initially set at $100,000. His bond was later revoked pending a Bail Revocation Hearing due to Dedeaux having prior drug charges against him.
