College student arrested and charged for child porn

JACKSON – A 22-year-old college student has been arrested and charged with possession of 10 counts of child pornography, Attorney General Jim Hood said.

Jonathan V. Russell, 22, of 9223 Warbler Avenue in Ocean Springs, was arrested on April 15 by investigators with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, with assistance from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Attorney General’s Office.

Russell was arrested after the Jackson County Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant at Russell’s residence.

“We thank Sheriff Mike Byrd and his investigators for their hard work on this case,” said Attorney General Hood. “We now have 25 affiliates participating in our task force efforts and are well on our way to putting every child predator in this state out of business or behind bars.”

Russell, a student at Jackson County Community College, was taken to the Jackson County Adult Detention Facility to await his initial appearance.

If convicted, Russell faces up to 400 years behind bars.
