DREAM, INC

Jackson, MS – August 17, 2009 –The Mississippi Underage Drinking Prevention Coalition of Madison and Rankin Counties (MUDPC), a collaboration between DREAM, Inc., and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of Central Mississippi (NCADD) will hold a luncheon and program on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at Reservoir Pointe – Catering by George’s in Ridgeland. The program will focus on the latest trends in underage alcohol drinking in America.

The coalition meeting will also discuss strategies and methods for reducing underage drinking in the area, according to DREAM’s Risa White, a Community Outreach Specialist with MUDPC.

We will review the environmental strategies like traffic safety checkpoints and the latest evidenced-based school curriculum program, which we hope to implement in all Rankin and Madison schools this academic year at no cost to the schools,” White said.

White says statistics that show that nearly half of all teen automobile crashes involve underage drinking, and alcohol abuse contributes to youth suicides, homicides, fatal injuries, and as many as two-thirds of all sexual assaults of teens.

White stated that the Mississippi Underage Drinking Prevention Coalition’s mission is to create a clear community consensus that underage drinking is illegal, unhealthy and unacceptable. Its goals include: 1. Prevent and/or reduce underage drinking consumption of alcohol and its related consequences; 2. Reduce alcohol-related expulsions and suspensions; 3. Reduce DUI arrests under 21; and 4. Reduce alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes/deaths.
