Curriculum will be mandatory

For more than 50 years, civil rights has been an integral part of Mississippi’s history. Many of the battles that have been fought and won, all in the name of freedom, had their start right here within the state. Mississippi students will soon have the opportunity to learn about those battles during the 2011-2012 school year, when civil rights history becomes a mandatory course in Mississippi schools.

Students in grades kindergarten through 12, will soon learn all about the injustices blacks suffered at the hands of segregationists as well as the civil rights leaders who helped bring better conditions.

Man killed after running off the road

A Chickasaw County man was killed and his passenger seriously injured after he reportedly ran off the road and flipped several times. Phillip Earrey, Jr., 31, of Van Vleet, was ejected after he ran off the roadway about four miles west of Okolona. The accident occurred on Dec. 17 about 8 p.m.

Earrey was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passenger, Erica Williams, 31, of Amory, who was also thrown from the vehicle, was airlifted to a Tupelo hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Violent fight starts in school over card game

A Greenville student said an argument over which card game to play in class resulted in a violent fight that left her and several others injured. School officials at Greenville-Weston High School are investigating the brawl which occurred just before the Christmas holiday.

Melissa Parker told WABG her daughter was beaten up and the fight was later posted on You Tube.

All of the students identified in the video were suspended from school and will soon face disciplinary action.

Grenada house fire under investigation

Grenada County authorities are still trying to determine what caused a house fire that left a family of seven homeless last week. Firefighters responded to a call on West Govan Street after the homeowner said the lights went out in his home.

The homeowner said he assumed the power was out in the block until he saw his neighbor’s lights on, WABG reported. The homeowner checked his fuse box only to find it on fire. While firefighters were able to save the building’s structure, the interior of the home was a total loss.
