City clerk pleads guilty to embezzlement

JACKSON – The former city clerk for the town of New Augusta will spend the next year on house arrest for embezzling money from the city. State Auditor Stacey Pickering said Emily Holder embezzled more than $53,000 from New Augusta by writing checks to herself and forging the mayor’s signature.

She was also charged with two counts of forgery.

“Investigators at the State Auditor’s Office have worked diligently on this case beginning in June 2009 when the auditor of the City of New Augusta discovered evidence of embezzlement,” said State Auditor Stacey Pickering. “Ms. Holder will serve one year of house arrest in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections and must pay restitution to the Town of New Augusta in the amount of $65,579.98, which includes interest and investigative costs.”

In addition to her sentencing, Holder must also participate in the Forrest-Perry County Community Service Program and perform 500 hours of community service.

Holder, a resident of Petal, was employed with the City of New Augusta beginning in January 2001 and she resigned June 18, 2009.
