Chiropractor gets 3 years for filing false insurance claims

JACKSON – A Columbus chiropractor who plead guilty to falsifying patient insurance forms has been sentenced to three years by a Lowndes County judge. Dr. James Edgar Donovan, 63, appeared before Judge Jim Kitchens in Lowndes County Circuit Court and under a plea agreement, was sentenced to three years, one year suspended and two years to serve under house arrest.

An investigation by the attorney general’s office found that Donovan, of Donovan Chiropractic Clinic at 415 13th Street N, in Columbus, made false or fraudulent claims on the insurance policies of four patients between Jan. 1, 2007 and March 23, 2008.

Donovan was arrested last May by investigators with the Insurance Fraud Unit of the attorney general’s office.

“Insurance fraud is a crime that costs us all,” said Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood. “Those who file false or inflated claims for medical procedures are almost always caught in the paper trail.”

Donovan was ordered to pay $500 to the Crime Victim’s Compensation Fund as well as restitution in the amount of $3,555.55 to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Mississippi.
