4 teens posing as ‘yard workers’ arrested in home burglary ring

PASCAGOULA – Jackson County authorities said four teens were arrested after they allegedly admitted that they intentionally posed as yard workers to unsuspecting homeowners with the sole purpose of burglarizing the residence.

Sheriff Mike Byrd said they have recovered numerous items allegedly stolen from several houses by a 19-year old and three juveniles. Byrd said knowledge of the burglary ring began to unfold on June 30 after one of his deputies responded to a burglary in progress on Eagle Pine Drive in the Gulf Estates Community. The deputy stopped and detained the suspect, Percy Carter, of Ocean Springs, and three juveniles while they were trying to flee the area.

Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division soon responded to the scene and arrested Carter and the three juvenile males. Investigators also recovered a shotgun, a .40 caliber pistol and a SKS Assault Rifle along with a Play Station, Wii, X-Box and many other items hidden in the woods near one of the suspect’s home.

Investigators searched the suspect’s home and also recovered a Wii, a .40 caliber pistol, TV car monitors, GPS units, a laptop and cash stolen from two vehicles and several other residences that had been burglarized earlier in the week.

Each of the four suspects allegedly told authorities they would go to a residence and knock on the door. If someone answered, they would ask to cut the grass or perform some other kind of yard work. If no one answered, they would allegedly break into the residence.

Carter, who is currently out on bond for grand larceny in Ocean Springs, was charged with two counts of burglary of a dwelling and two counts of commercial burglary of an automobile.

All three juveniles were charged with two counts of burglary of a dwelling and two counts of burglary of an automobile.

They were transported to youth court.
