Man and woman found dead in backyard

While many details are being withheld pending an investigation, Hattiesburg police have confirmed that two people are dead following a domestic dispute on Wednesday, July 4 in Forrest County.

Lt. Eric Proulx said officers responded to a disturbance call Wednesday night at a residence and found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds in the backyard of the home.

Forrest County Deputy Coroner Jonathan Nobles said the names of the deceased will not be released until the family is notified, and it appears the deaths is a murder/suicide.

Booneville man arrested in traffic stop

A Booneville man is being held in the Lee County jail after a traffic stop Tuesday night. Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Ray Hall tells WTVA that Shawn M. Brown, 38, was pulled over around 7:30 p.m. by a state trooper.

Authorities reportedly found a half pound of marijuana and other drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.

Hall said Brown has been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell. Additional charges against Brown could be pending.

Drowning ruled cause of a death in Moss Point

Hancock County Coroner Vicki Broadus said an autopsy has confirmed drowning was the cause of death for a man whose remains were found Monday night in the Escatawpa River.

Moss Point Police Chief Keith Davis said a public-works employee spotted the body in waters downtown following an afternoon storm. Police were notified around 5:30 p.m., according to The Sun Herald.

Davis said the victim was in his mid-50s. He had been seen fishing in the area Monday.

2 Vancleave women accused of food stamp fraud

Two Vancleave women are accused of fraud in a criminal investigation involving thousands of dollars from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

Sheriff Mike Byrd told The Sun Herald investigators have arrested 28-year-old Shante Oni Wilson and 40-year-old Juanita Theresa Waltman.

Byrd says their arrests on Friday came following an investigation of Wilson’s complaint that her Electronic Benefits Transfer card was missing.

Byrd said investigators determined Wilson had given her card to Waltman in October 2011.

Both were booked at the county jail and released after their bonds were set at $1,000 each.

Woman reportedly injured in vehicle rollover

A woman was injured Wednesday afternoon in a car accident in Attala County on Highway 43 South. According to a WTVA affiliate, the driver was a 21-year-old woman. Her identity has not been confirmed.

The car appeared to have rolled over several times. The woman was taken to a local hospital. Her condition was not revealed. There were reportedly two children also in the vehicle, in car seats, but were said to be unharmed.

The accident remains under investigation.
