PICAYUNE – The case of a domestic dispute that turned violent will be presented to a Pearl River County Grand Jury, although charges against the 12-year-old boy involved are not likely.

The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the 12-year-old shot his father in the neck because he thought his mom’s life was in danger.

According to Sheriff David Allison, the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 7, at the couple’s residence in the Gumpond community. The address and names of those involved have been withheld to protect the identity of the child, the Picayune Item reported.

About 6 p.m., deputies and investigators with the department responded to a shooting call in the area to find a man with a gunshot wound to his neck. The man was transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment.

An investigation into the incident determined the man was at the home to pick up some things after he and his wife had separated about two weeks earlier. A verbal altercation ensued during the man’s visit and eventually turned physical.

The couple’s 12-year-old son grabbed a .22 caliber handgun that was kept in the home and shot his father in the neck in an effort to protect his mother.

While charges have not been pressed against the father, as of yet, the sheriff’s department said the charge of aggravated assault domestic violence will be presented to the next meeting of the grand jury.
