JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi State Department of Health says one of its employees inadvertently released some patients’ private information to a contractor doing work for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The department says Monday that it is notifying people whose privacy might have been breached. It did not say how many are affected, but the information was from people treated at Health Department clinics in 2017.
A spreadsheet sent to the contractor Jan. 25 included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and laboratory results. Health Department officials became aware of the situation Jan. 30.
A news release says each person who received the private information has deleted it, but the email was unprotected and could have been viewed by others.
