MDOT and partners dedicate Habitat home in Jackson

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) recently held a dedication ceremony for a Habitat for Humanity project in which employees from both agencies volunteered hours of their time to help construct a beautiful 1,200 square foot home for Pedro and Shawn Galloway.

The ceremony was held Monday, June 17, in front of the Habitat home, located on Englewood Street in Jackson. Suspect charged in Columbus fatal shooting

A 30-year-old West Point man has been charged with murder after authorities say he fled the scene of a Sunday shooting.

WTVA-TV reports Columbus police initially responded to a vehicle accident just before 3:30 a.m. on June 9.

June 13, 2013, will forever be written in history as a day when the life and legacy of American hero and Alcorn alum Medgar Wiley Evers ’52 was honored by dedicating a heroic size statue on the campus of his alma mater. Hundreds gathered for the memorial dedication ceremony to witness the historic event.

Preacher charged with sexual battery

Authorities have charged an Alcorn County preacher with sexual battery. The Alcorn County Sheriff’s Department told WTVA that Timothy D. Nall, 57, has been charged based on a grand jury indictment.

Child killed in two-vehicle accident

A two-vehicle accident at the Highway 18 and Springridge Road intersection Saturday, resulted in at least one death, WLBT reported.

A one-year-old died in the accident, according to Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart. Corp. Otis Easterling with MHP, identified the child as Christopher Salas. The child was in a car seat.

MDOC responds to federal lawsuit

The Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) is working with Management & Training Corp. (MTC) and Health Assurance to respond to a federal lawsuit filed recently over alleged conditions at East Mississippi Correctional Facility (EMCF) near Meridian in Lauderdale County.

It is the agency’s policy to let the facts play out in court, prison officials said.

However, the allegations made against MDOC officials are unfairly damaging to its commitment to provide efficient and effective offender custody, care, control and treatment consistent with sound correctional principles and constitutional practices, MDOC spokesman Grace Fisher said. […]

6 injured after collision in Hancock County

At least six people were injured following a collision in Hancock County Saturday afternoon, WLOX reported.

According to American Medical Response officials, emergency responders arrived on the scene at the intersection of Highway 603 and Texas Flat Road in Hancock County shortly after 5 p.m.

When they arrived, five people had to be transported to area hospitals for injuries. Another person had to be air-lifted. One of the vehicles involved had an Illinois license plate. […]

Police charge boyfriend in death of pregnant teen

Jackson police have charged 20-year-old Octavious Morrison with capital murder in the death of his pregnant girlfriend.

He is being held without bond.

Police say 17-year-old Octavia Love was seven months pregnant and the unborn fetus did not survive.

Detectives said Love was in a back bedroom at a residence in the 1500 block of Wood Glen Drive, Saturday afternoon, June 8, with her Morrison when the rifle was discharged. […]

Man accused in couple’s killing owed them money

A man who allegedly murdered an 89-year-old man and his ailing 86-year-old wife worked for them in the past and owed them money, police said.

Interim Clinton Police Chief Mike Warren told The Clarion-Ledger that 47-year-old Willie Williams owed money to Arthur and Maxine Hodge but hadn’t worked for them in the past year.

Stephanie Henderson, a niece of the couple, says her uncle had made small loans over time to Williams totaling $1,300. […]
