Special 90th Birthday Salute to Luther B. Buckley

Frederick Douglass said, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” In that spirit, Saturday, March 2, 2013, a tribute was held at Lanier High School honoring its retired principal Luther B. Buckley on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Very few have “built stronger children” and put in action Douglass’ words better than Principal Buckley. Legendary for his embrace of all children, Buckley guided Lanier High School during the tumultuous Civil Rights era when “Separate but Equal” was the standard in Mississippi….. […]

“Back in the Day” month long presentations at New Hope Baptist Church bring history to life

On Thursday, Feb. 28, New Hope Baptist Church culminated its month long celebration of Black History month, themed “Back in the Day,” with a tribute to Medgar Wiley Evers. Mrs. Myrlie Evers-Williams also was honored. Dr. Tonya Moore, the niece of Medgar, was the moderator.

Giving remarks were Medgar’s daughter Reena Evers-Everette and his brother Charles Evers. The children of New Hope brightened the program with their lively performances, including the song “Kum Ba Yah.”…. […]

First Lady Michelle Obama uses first stop on Let’s Move anniversary to visit Clinton, Miss.

With the theme “Change is Happening,” First Lady Michelle Obama came to Clinton Wednesday, Feb. 27, as the first stop on her anniversary tour with Let’s Move. She spent much of the day at Northside and Eastside Elementary School with students and teachers and addressed the select public gathered at 2 p.m.

The First Lady was joined by TV personality and child nutrition advocate Rachael Ray to highlight the new healthy school lunches that are now being served across the nation….. […]
