Suspect was wanted in connection with an armed robbery

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is looking into the case of a Tippah County sheriff’s deputy that was shot in the leg and a suspect that was killed following a high speed pursuit on Dec. 30. Authorities said Deputy Brent Garner was shot in the leg by a suspect who allegedly committed an armed robbery in Ripley earlier that day.

The chase between the officers and the suspect, who was not named, began in Ripley and ended at a residence on a rural road in Dumas.

The officers opened fire on the suspect, killing him, after he shot Garner in the leg. 

Garner, who works as a part-time deputy for Tippah County and a full-time police officer in Ripley, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Columbus man sought for kidnapping and beating ex-girlfriend

Columbus police are looking for a man who allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend and later shot at her. James Earl Moore, 38, was last seen on Dec. 30 driving a gold Honda. Authorities said on Dec. 30, about 5:30 p.m., Moore allegedly tricked his ex-girlfriend into getting into his vehicle.

The woman, who police did not name, said Moore then punched her several times in the face and drove her from 11th Street North to the Third Avenue area, WCBI reported.

The woman told police she was able to escape from the car and ran down the street with Moore firing several shots at her.

Police told WCBI that Moore has a lengthy criminal history and he is considered armed and dangerous.

4 charged with auto burglary in Ocean Springs

Two men and two juveniles have been charged with auto burglary after Ocean Springs police said they were seen fleeing the scene of the crime. Det. Sgt. Joel England said around 1 a.m., on Dec. 31, officers responded to a call at the Lake View subdivision. England said when they arrived on the scene an immediate foot chase began between officers and three white males.

Officers caught up with three of the suspects and a fourth later turned himself in to police.

Two of the suspects are 16-years old and were transported to the Jackson County Youth Detention center. They were charged with two counts each of auto burglary.

A third suspect, a 19-year old black male, Robert Wayne Wheaton, of Pascagoula, was taken into custody. And a fourth suspect, 17-year old James Michael Hammons, of Hurley, turned himself in a few hours after the incident.

Hammons was charged as an adult with two counts of auto burglary and his bond was set at $3,000. Wheaton was also charged with two counts of auto burglary and his bond was set at $40,000.
