Annual plant sale at Strawberry Plains

HOLLY SPRINGS – The Strawberry Plains Audubon Center, located in Holly Springs, is offering a one-day sale of choice North American plant species and varieties selected and grown for the region, on May 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event’s sponsors said the sale will include an exciting mix of native trees, shrubs, flowering perennials, ferns and grasses in a multitude of shapes, textures and colors, including many plants that will attract Hummingbirds.

The sale will take place, rain or shine, at the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center which is located at 285 Plains Road.

Also available will be a small selection of non-native, non-invasive, plants that support wildlife such as Hummingbirds.

“Whether your garden is large or small, sunny or shady, wet or dry, Strawberry Plains Audubon staff and volunteer plant experts will be on-hand to help you find that perfect plant,” said Katherine Boyle, the Education and Outreach Director at Strawberry Plains.

Boyle said prior sales at Strawberry Plains have been a huge success and the plants help support the environment.

“Native plant gardening is becoming critically important to the survival of wildlife, particularly birds,” said Boyle. “Native plants attract many birds and the insects that birds eat. These plants are adapted to life in this area so they do not need dangerous fertilizers or pesticides to thrive. Using native plants in your garden or around your home creates a safe haven for birds and wildlife,” she continued. “With a growing reliance on exotic species for landscaping, native plants and habitats are becoming increasingly rare. This sale will offer plants that are not readily available at most nurseries.”

Everyone is encouraged to arrive early as all plants will be available on a “first-come basis.” Shoppers can also bring carts, wagons or boxes to make transporting their plants easier. Cash or checks will be accepted.

Local artist vendors will be selling handmade garden accessories and artwork during the sale.

There will also be a morning bird walk prior to the sale, at 7 a.m., at a cost of $5 per person.
