High school football kicks off this week

Callaway high school kicks off the 2010 high school football season. The chargers are coming off a successful season under second-year head coach Daryl Jones, making the playoffs and losing a close first-round game by one point. A year later, the Chargers have one of the best lineman in the state in Aaron Morris, excellent coaching staff, and goal of getting better daily. When asked about his success and the program, Coach Jones quickly stated, “We want to be competing the best we can each week and take small steps to get to our goals”. State championship is what most teams are preaching this time of year, but Coach Jones isn’t. “Right now, we must continue to get better daily at practice and do the little things that it takes to win.” Coach Jones is not by any means saying his chargers aren’t capable, he understands that it is a long season and overlooking the small things could deter the chargers from continuing their winning ways. Callaway will do battle with Lawrence County Thursday night at Newell field at 7:30 pm.

Friday night two cross town rivalries will be under way. The Provine rams will be hosting the Forest Hill Patriots at Hughes Field. The rams are looking to get back to their football distinction as the best in Jackson.  They are also looking to avenge a loss to the Patriots last year. On a muddy, sloppy, football field last year, the patriots toned down their air attack and pounded the football right into the rams defense.  Forest Hill is looking to continue their success over the last few seasons.  Coming out of the football basement into respectability has been lead by head coach Mario Lane and his coaching staff.

Good high school games are made up of more than just football, the bands and drill teams play a factor also. And Friday night doesn’t expect to be a letdown when the Jim Hill tigers battle the bulldogs of Lanier. Fans expect a good showing on the field, but an even better showing in the stands. Jim Hill’s band will be under the direction of Mr. Little as he starts his reign. Tiger fans know that halftime is showtime. The tigerettes often provide dance moves that the competition admires and their fans love to see. However, this week, the rangerettes will be on display also. The lovely ladies of the “833” will grace the field as well. Lanier’s band provides the music to keep the crowd hype and they will have their hands full this week. As for the game, Jim Hill is looking to erase the bitter taste of last season. Payback for losing to the bulldogs weighs in also. Lanier is steadily improving while trying to rebuild.

Rounding out the first week in the metro area, Murrah travels to Canton, Wingfield travels to Yazoo City, Bailey travels to McLaurin (Thursday night); Ridgeland travels to Mendenhall, and Clinton travels to Brandon.  An important note to keep in mind: from Aug. 19 to Sept. 24, game times are 7:30 p.m., after that, game times are 7 p.m. Admission starts at $6.
