Sports Spotlight: Jackson State QB Casey Therriault

Casey Therriault is a transfer quarterback, but has emerged as a star in the Jackson Metropolitan area. Therriault is a junior at Jackson State University and is in his first season, but you would not even know that.

Therraiult has led the Tigers to their best start (5-1) under JSU head football coach Rick Comegy since he arrived in 2006. He is from Wyoming Park, Mich., and is the man both on and off the field. He was born June 20, 1989, has three brothers and is the son of Ed Therriault.

Therriault was added to the Walter Payton award watch list  Oct. 3. The award was established in 1987 to recognize the most outstanding college football player on the FCS level. No one from Jackson State has ever won the award.

In 2009, he helped the Grand Rapids CC Raiders to a 9-2 record as a sophomore. He passed for 2,169 yards and 24 touchdowns and rushed for 620 yards and 11 touchdowns. Therriault also took the Raiders to the JUCO National Championship in 2009 in the Top of the Mountain Bowl where they lost 41-37 to Snow College.

In JSU’s season opener against Delta State University, Therriault completed 27 of 47 pass attempts for 404 yards and threw for three touchdowns. Therriault was also the “star” against Tennessee State Sept., 11 in the Southern Heritage Classic. JSU defeated TSU 33-26 and finally ended their seven-game losing streak to the Tigers of Tennessee State. Therriault had thrown for 284 yards and four touchdowns.

Therriault is a huge reason why JSU is currently ranked number one in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, but he credits his teammates as well for their hard work and dedication.

“I think this team is much more focused and disciplined this year than they were last year,” said Therriault.

The Tigers were well focused and disciplined when they defeated Southern University Saturday, Oct. 16 in a shootout – 49-45 in the big showdown of the battle of the big cats.” Therriault threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns.

Therriault focus is all about “Winning the SWAC,” and having a successful year on the football field and in the classroom.
