NEW ORLEANS (AP) — With Drew Brees finding his usual rhythm, and the Saints defense showing vast improvement under new coordinator Rob Ryan, it appears that coach Sean Payton is putting together another contender.

NFL stadium falls leave 1 fan dead, 2 hurt

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Falls by fans at stadiums in San Francisco and Indianapolis during NFL season openers have left one man dead and two other people injured, authorities said.

At the 49ers’ game against the Packers at Candlestick Park Sunday, a man fell to his death from an elevated pedestrian walkway.

The death came just after kickoff in the San Francisco’s 34-28 win over Green Bay, police said, and multiple witnesses reported the man appeared to be intoxicated before he fell to a sidewalk… […]

Former Mississippi standout Crespino dies at 75

Robert “Bobby” Crespino, a tight end and receiver for some of Mississippi’s best football teams from 1958 to 1960, died on Monday, July 29, in Atlanta. He was 75.

Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon, Miss., confirmed Crespino’s death after a lengthy illness, but did not provide details of the illness.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Crespino played for three Ole Miss teams that had a combined 29-3-1 record and earned a share of two national championships in 1959 and 1960. He caught 30 passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns in 1960. […]

Alyne Payton, Walter Payton’s mom, dies after long illness

Alyne S. Payton, the mother of the late NFL Hall of Fame running back and Chicago Bears star Walter Payton, died Monday at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. She was 87.

Family members say she died after a long illness.

Officials with Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home said services were scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 10 at Black’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson. Burial was Saturday in Resthaven Cemetery in Columbia. […]
