Child, 3, drowns in Jackson County swimming pool

The Sheriff’s Office in Jackson County is reporting the death of a 3-year-old child in a swimming pool.
 
The Sun Herald reports the death is believed to be the result of an accidental drowning Saturday, May 25, in a pool in the Gulf Park Estates area in the St. Andrews community.

The child’s name was being withheld pending further investigation and notification of family members.

1 teen dead, another missing after water sports accident

One Pascagoula High School student is dead and another missing after an incident on the Pascagoula River Sunday. Caleb Sweeten was killed in a water skiing accident while his teammate Brandon Rich remains missing.

According to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd, the accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. on the Pascagoula River, just north of the U.S. 90 bridge. Byrd says the teens were boogie boarding when one teen fell off and the other went into the water, WCBI reported.

Sweeten was a sophomore, a part-time starter at linebacker and was expected to start next football season, WCBI said. […]

9 enter senate race to succeed Harden

Nine candidates are running for a state Senate seat in part of Hinds County. They’re competing to succeed Democrat Alice Harden, who died in December.

The special election is Feb. 5, with a runoff Feb. 26.
