Middle School Track Championship Promises To Be Exciting

The reigning middle school girl champions have gotten off to a good start just in time for city preliminaries this week. Girls’ sports are often overlooked, but you will miss a treat if you miss seeing these athletes run and compete. These young future high school stars are just as competitive as their male counterparts and show the passion and determination necessary to achieve success.

Alyssa Pennington, an 8th-grader, is one of the many talented young girls from Chastain. Pennington won the 200-meter dash last week and ran relay races. Although Chastain is leading the pack, Brinkley, Northwest and Peeples Middle Schools are on their heels and have beaten Chastain in some events.

Some sprints are especially exciting to watch because of the personal battles between the girls. They not only want to be No. 1, they do not want to lose to their rivals.

Thursday, April 22, will be a good competitive meet with bragging rights for the city on the line. For 8th-graders, it’s their last chance to represent their middle school before having to prove themselves over again as a freshman in high school.
