Church’s Juneteenth Celebration like no other

Special to The Mississippi Link

St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 816 Madison Ave., is the location where the East Mississippi Conference Lay Organization will commemorate Juneteenth on Saturday, June 13.

Juneteenth, a holiday celebrated by African Americans in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, California, and other parts of the United States, commemorates the abolition of slavery.

There will be a commemorative program starting at 11 a.m.  Immediately following the program will be a health fair and a street fair/block party.

Catfish lunches will be on sale for $8. During the health fair, medical professionals will be on hand to do free blood pressure screenings.

Rev. Archie Smith, the pastor of St. Paul, expressed his delight in being given the opportunity to host the event.  “It is an honor to host the celebration for the 8th Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Church.  Each year the church celebrates the date the slaves found out that they’d been freed.

“By being a part of this celebration on not only a local level, but with the district, we want to make sure that it touches everyone’s heart. The day will be one of remembrance. We want all who can to come out to share this historical event with us. It promises to be one filled fun, history and healthy tips. It will be a day of reflection and a day of building stronger generations. There won’t be another celebration like it in the metropolitan area.”
