Woman sustains third degree burns

Local news reports said a woman was set on fire by her boyfriend earlier this month while she was sitting in her car outside of a Jackson nightclub. Jackson Fire Investigator Chief Gregory Travis told WLBT that Lewis Wade poured gasoline on the woman, whose name is not being released, and lit her on fire.

The incident occurred around midnight, on Dec. 19, outside of the VFW Lounge on Sunray Drive.

The woman was transported to UMC and later to a burn unit in Georgia, reportedly, in critical condition with third degree burns and smoke inhalation.

News reports also said that Wade, 49, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He was taken to the Hinds County Detention Center where more charges may follow.

Suspect in double murder bound over to grand jury

A man charged with two counts of capital murder has waived his right to a preliminary hearing in court, sources said.

John Wayne McChristion, 22, of Holcomb, was arrested on Nov. 19 for allegedly killing his former employer, Rev. Jimmy Stauddy, 69, and his live-in caregiver, Martha Stoker, 49.

Stauddy, a former policeman and investigator, was found in his bed with multiple stab wounds on Sunday, Nov. 15, and Stoker, was found on the floor nearby with similar stab wounds. Authorities said the victim’s throats and stomachs had been cut open. Stauddy was disabled and in the advanced stages of Parkinson’s Disease.

Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider said McChristion, a former employee at the Staddy home, admitted that he went to the house looking for money when he got into an argument with Stoker and Stauddy over $8 to buy drugs.

McChristion has a history of drug-related arrests in other states, but not in Mississippi.

Strider said they hope to “get everything ready” in McChristion’s case so that he can go before the grand jury for the January term of circuit court. McChristion is being held at the Grenada County Jail in solitary confinement, Strider said, for his own safety.

Tchula man gets life in prison for murder

A Tchula man was found guilty in court earlier this month for shooting another man in the back two years ago.

A jury in Copiah County found Veshon Malone guilty of capital murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery for the shooting death of Clinton Chinn, Sr. Chinn was shot once in the back as he was returning home from work in Humphreys County. Malone was given a life sentence in the custody of MDOC.

Two other men, Lee Smith and Quincy Johnson, plead guilty to their part in the murder and are also serving life sentences, WLBT reported.

Two arrested for house burglary

Two men were arrested this month for their involvement in a house burglary in Washington County. Shun Gilmore and Louis Groves, are in the custody of Greenville Police, after officials said they allegedly broke into a house on Neff Street. Gilmore was charged with one count of house burglary and possession of marijuana. He also had an outstanding warrant for contempt of court and Groves was charged with one count of house burglary.

Woman shot during domestic dispute

Authorities in Pearl are investigating a shooting that put a Jackson woman in the hospital. Local news reports said that Lakeeta Edwards, 34, was shot in the foot while sitting in the car with her boyfriend, Joseph Bonner.

Officials told WLBT that Edwards and Bonner, 42, were sitting in a car outside the offices of Southern Air Conditioning Supply on Climate Drive, Bonner’s employer, when Edwards was shot in the foot.

Edwards told authorities Bonner shot her, while Bonner said Edwards accidentally shot herself. Bonner was charged with domestic aggravated assault.

A gun was recovered from the vehicle.
