GULFPORT – Captain Neal Stachura, of the Gulfport Police Department, said they are still investigating the case of a 45-year-old Harrison County woman and her 21-year-old disabled son who were found murdered in their home earlier this month, and the apparent shooter who was later found dead in his apartment.

Stachura said Karen Ferguson and Trevor Cole Ferguson, who was confined to a wheelchair, were found shot to death inside their home on Kent Avenue on Oct. 10. They both suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

The shooter, 70-year-old Paul Buckman, was later found dead in his apartment bathroom,  about two miles, away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Stachura said the motive in the killings is unclear, but Buckman had been arrested in July for sexually molesting a member of the Ferguson family. Buckman was free on a $50,000 bond at the time of the killings.

Stachura said police became aware of the case when Karen’s 5-year-old son ran to a neighbor’s house “crying and screaming” that “the bad man who hurt my brother” was not hurting his mother.

When police arrived, both Karen and Trevor were dead.

Authorities said Buckman became a suspect after witnesses reported seeing him near the Ferguson’s home about 3 p.m. wearing khaki shorts and covered with blood.

When police arrived at Buckman’s home at the Crestwood Apartments, they initially thought there was a hostage situation and cordoned off the area. But when they entered Buckman’s apartment, they found him deceased in his bathroom. His death was ruled a suicide.

Stachura said he could not release many details about the case pending the investigation, but he said Buckman’s sexual molestation charge was scheduled to go before the grand jury soon.
