Witness’ claim challenged in Miss. mayor’s trial

JACKSON, Miss. (AP)  A key government witness who confidently told a jury that Mayor Frank Melton was drunk the night he led a raid on a purported crack house gave conflicting testimony last year while agreeing to a plea deal.

Marcus Wright, one of two bodyguards for Melton initially charged in the case, had told the jury on Tuesday that Melton was clearly intoxicated after hours of hard drinking on the day he led a group of teenagers in attacking the duplex. But defense attorney John Reeves challenged Wright’s testimony during Wednesday’s cross-examination with statements Wright made while agreeing to a plea deal to a lesser charge in exchange for his testimony.

When pressed, Wright said his “memory changed.”

Melton faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
