Large amount of cash taken from premises

The Jackson Police Department said a suspect walked into the Wendy’s Restaurant, on Terry Road, Saturday night and robbed the store at gunpoint. Officer Colendula Green said about 7:53 p.m., on March 12, the suspect entered the store at 3005 Terry Road wearing a black hoodie, gloves, a blue mask and sunglasses.

The suspect brandished a pistol and walked behind the counter and made the employees empty all the cash registers into bags. Green said the suspect also forced the manger into an office and robbed the safe.

“The suspect…took a substantial amount of [cash] out of the safe before fleeing out the back door,” Green said. “There is surveillance on the incident and detectives are currently following up on this incident.”

Burglar startled by homeowner

Columbus police are looking for a man who allegedly broke into a residence while the homeowner was there. Authorities said the break-in took place in the 600 block of 22nd Street North on Saturday, March 5.

Officer Terrie Songer, of the Columbus Police Department, said the female owner of the residence was in her living room when she heard what appeared to be the sound of breaking glass in her kitchen.

Songer said the woman walked toward the kitchen, in the rear of the house, and reportedly saw a black male trying to get in. The suspect ran from the house and Columbus police began a search of the area.

The investigation continues.

Water Valley Superintendent resigns

WTVA is reporting that for the second time in less than a year, the Water Valley School District is looking for a new superintendent. The school board formerly accepted the resignation of Deborah Moran, who told the board she plans to return to the Gulf Coast and cited family-related issues as the reason behind her departure.

Moran’s last day will be June 30.
