Two more former candidates and a leading minister endorse Johnson for Mayor

Just before noon Friday, Jackson mayoral candidate Harvey Johnson picked up two more endorsements from former mayoral candidates.

At an 11:30 a.m. press conference outside of the Johnson headquarters, former mayoral candidates Eddie Fair and Brenda Scott announce their support of Johnson for mayor.

Johnson’s own pastor Rev. Walter Johnson offered prayer.

“I’m honored to be here among the ministers today as I offer my endorsement to Brother Harvey Johnson,” said Scott. “I spent a lot of time with the candidates over the last four months,” said former candidate Brenda Scott. And I must say that mayor Johnson …candidate Johnson has been the one that has been accessible and approachable.”

Eddie Fair stated that he’s giving his support to Harvey Johnson, “because the City of Jackson has to have the best that it can have.” “Keep in mind, we have two good candidates, but one has to be the better one. I truly believe that Harvey is the better candidate to move this city forward,” Fair said. So I believe that in order for this city to be all that it can be and be the best of the new south that we have to have Harvey. We have to give Jackson a fair chance.”

Mayoral candidate Johnson followed Fair by saying, “I’ve heard that give Jackson a fair chance so much,” but that’s the first time I’ve heard it connected with me.” The group of supporters and attendees burst out into laughter. “I really appreciate your support – from the clergy; my fellow yoke men. We’ve been on the campaign trail for a long time. I am very pleased that they saw fit to endorse me.”

Also announcing his endorsement of the former mayor was Rev. Hosea Hines, pastor of College Hill Baptist Church. Hines made the opening remarks.

“I’m here with pastors and ministers as well as two candidates who were running for mayor to give our support behind Harvey Johnson, who we believe is the best candidate for the job,” said Hines.

The Mississippi Link later talked to candidate Marshand Crisler about his reaction to Johnson’s recent endorsements of Fair, Scott and Hines. “No amount of endorsements can take away the need to move Jackson forward,” Crisler said. “He can’t distract voters from the truth. I plan to move Jackson forward.”

Hines, who presided during the press conference, said he and others Johnson supporters are encouraging people of the faith-based community, the civic community to go out this coming Tuesday to vote for Harvey Johnson. “First of all, he has a proven track record. We know his works – his labor of love. Second of all, we know his capacity and capability to lead this city in a productive way,” Hines said. “Thirdly, we have confidence in Harvey. We know that he’s a man of integrity; he’s a man of loyalty. He’s a man this is able to get the job done. We simply want to say we give him our 110 percent endorsement.”
