Suspect arrested in Jackson nightclub murder

JACKSON – The Jackson Police Department said they have a suspect in custody wanted in the murder of a man at a nightclub earlier this week. Robert Griffin was arrested on May 4 about 2 p.m. and questioned in the murder of Carlos Gray at the Block-to-Block nightclub, also known as the Purple Passion club.

Griffin, 23, was charged with murder and transported to the Hinds County Detention Center. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday morning.

Jackson Police Officer Colendula Green said on Sunday, May 1 about 4:35 a.m., shots rang out at the nightclub at 3730 Medgar Evers Blvd.

Gray, 32, and two other people were shot including a 25-year old man, Kawun Fisher, who WLBT reported was shot in his right knee and a 16-year old who needed surgery for life-threatening injuries.

Gray died from his injuries.

Since Gray’s murder, neighborhood residents have petitioned to have the doors of the troubled Purple Passion closed for good. Police said they have responded to the club at least 23 times this year.

One woman told WLBT that her brother was shot and killed at the club three years ago and Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes said he sent a memo asking the city to declare the club a public nuisance.

Stokes said a hearing on the matter should be scheduled soon.
