State law prohibits tattoos and body piercing on children

A 34-year-old woman has been charged with illegally piercing the body of a 15-year-old girl at an unlicensed home-shop near Southaven High School, while her husband was arrested for drugs. Regina Clanton was arrested on Sept. 1, after a concerned mother called police to report that her daughter got a belly button ring without her permission.

On Wednesday, police went to the Clanton’s residence in the 8200 block of Pinebrook with a search warrant, and arrested Regina for illegal body piercing and simple assault. Her husband, 42-year-old Gary Clanton, was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police Lt. Mark Little said Regina has been released on $1,300 bond.

Former newspaper editor and Barbour aide dies

James L. “Buddy” Bynum, former editor of The Meridian Star and a former aide to Gov. Haley Barbour and former Congressman Trent Lott, has died at his home in Ridgeland. He was 59. Family members said Bynum died Saturday of complications of pancreatic cancer.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Chapel of the Cross Episcopal Church with burial at 4 p.m. in Little Rock, Miss. Survivors include his wife, Sandy; and a daughter.

He served nearly five years as director of communications for Barbour. From 2000-2005, Bynum was editor of The Meridian Star, his hometown newspaper. Bynum was director of public affairs at the Mississippi Department of Economic and Community Development, the predecessor agency of the Mississippi Development Authority, from 1998-2000. From 1993-1997, Bynum was editor and a co-owner of the Mississippi Business Journal.

Bynum’s career included service as a deputy assistant secretary with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and press secretary for then-U.S. Rep. Trent Lott, both in Washington, D.C. Earlier in his career, after majoring in journalism at the University of Mississippi, he worked for The Sun-Herald on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and covered state government and politics for the Jackson Daily News.

Man arrested for meth lab in Gulfport

A 27-year old Gulfport man was arrested after police found the remnants of a meth lab at his residence. Phillip K. Albert is being held on a $60,000 bond after an incident on Aug. 26. Police served a search warrant at the premises in the 2200 block of Kevin Court. The officers recovered the remains of a meth lab as well as the precursor chemicals used to manufacture meth.

Albert was arrested at the residence and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality arrived on the scene and took custody of the hazardous waste.

Albert was booked and transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.

Two Clarksdale men shot in random shootings

Clarksdale police are investigating two shootings. One occurred on Aug. 13 around 5:15 p.m., when a black male was riding in a vehicle in the 600 block of Grant Street. Authorities didn’t name the victim, but said he was hit when shots were fired in the area. No suspects are in custody.

Police are also investigating a shooting that occurred on Aug. 28 about 2:52 a.m. Another unidentified black male was standing in the 300 block of Madison Street when Captain Robbie Linley said he was shot in the leg by an unknown subject. Police have no suspects in custody.
