Son-in-law charged in murder of businessman

WINONA – Authorities have arrested a Kilmichael man and charged him with the murder of a Winona businessman found shot to death in his home. Curtis Davis, Jr., 24, was arrested on Thursday, Dec. 3, after Sheriff Jerry “Bubba” Nix said Davis allegedly confessed to the crime.

“He was arrested in Batesville,” Sheriff Nix said. “We took him up there for a polygraph and he had never had a polygraph before. And that’s when he confessed.”

Nix said Davis confessed to shooting his father-in-law, 45-year old William “Chug” McCuiston, owner of Spring Hill Tree Service, two days earlier, on Tuesday, Dec. 1. McCuiston was found by his wife and daughter when they returned home from visiting a nearby relative. McCuiston had been shot twice with a high powered rifle.

“It was a 30-30 rifle,” Nix said. “And it belonged to McCuiston.”

Nix said Davis gained entry into McCuiston’s home on Minerva Road through a sliding back door that was unlocked. Nix said in an earlier interview that the assailant was already in the house when McCuiston came home, and McCuiston had been shot in the back.

Davis reportedly told authorities that he gave the weapon used in the shooting to his cousin.

“We found [the cousin] who lives in Winona,” Sheriff Nix said. “And she told us where she put it, in a garbage dumpster behind J.J. Knox Gym, but she didn’t know anything about what was going on.”

Davis was charged with murder, grand larceny and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Davis, a registered sex offender, was convicted of statutory rape in Oktibbeha County in 2008 and he is currently on probation. He is scheduled to appear in Montgomery County Justice Court on Dec. 17 and he is being held without bond at the Carroll-Montgomery Correctional Facility in Vaiden.
