Ole Miss football player dies during workout

OXFORD – A 20-year old University of Mississippi football player is dead after school officials said he collapsed during a routine workout Friday. Ole Miss trainers said Bennie F. Abram, of Southaven, was struggling Friday during the first day of team workouts.

WTVA reported that 15 minutes into the “conditioning portion of the workout” Abrams was having problems. Trainers began first aid on Abrams and called 911. Abrams died at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford, several hours later at 12:11 p.m.

Abrams’ grandparents told local news stations that he had asthma, but it was unclear if that had anything to do with his death.

Reportedly, temperatures in Oxford peaked Friday at about 57 degrees.

Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy said foul play is not suspected, but an autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

Abrams, a non-scholarship junior transferred from Itawamba Community College last fall. An exercise science major, he was enrolled in UM’s School of Applied Sciences. Abrams joined the football team as a safety in January.

Ole Miss Head Football Coach Houston Nutt told ESPN: “Bennie was a fine young man and a hard worker. He was a great person to be around and well-mannered young man. His loss is so tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and all who knew Bennie.”
